Red Hot Chili Peppers Or Not – It is Up to You

Jorn Antonsen asked:

Most of the people I know dream of being a rock star. Of course most of them want to be the lead singer of a world famous band. They want to be Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers or James Hetfield of Metallica. I think its mainly two things that appeal to young men and women (and old ones), the spotlight itself and the lifestyle that the spotlight gives. Who would not dream of being the center of attention wherever you are? And if that attention brings lot of girls, more ways to earn cash and the chance to see your face on TV and in magazines? Even Better!

How do ordinary people go about to achieve this dream? Well, in my experience, most ordinary people don’t. They don’t have the guts to follow their dream. It’s really not at all a problem that is unique for these kind of fantasies, you see it in every “dream-category”. People are afraid to step up and out there, afraid to make a fool of themselves. It seems as if most people have some kind of reservation against giving to much of themselves.

Is this the thing that separate the ordinary people and the stars? Are you born with either star-potential or average-joe potential? I belive that to some degree some people are born with talents and courage, and others not. But I also belive that you can be whatever you want to be if you only try hard enough and put yourself out there. Its really a question about self-confidence, and as you all have probably experienced, self-confidence is not something you have but something you have to get.

Just how do you get this? By putting yourself out there. It doesnt have to be in front of a lot of people at first, maybe just some of your close friends, your girl friend, your mom, etc. After you get confident singing (or doing whatever your dream is) at this level, you can move on to a bigger stage. You may want to try out your local karaoke bar. Whan you feel you master this stage, move on up to the next level, and so on… You get the picture. Think of this as part of your music education. Its basically the same as any other education, it prepares you for what you have to deal with later.

This was actually the way I did it. I was afraid of singing in front of people for years, but the dream was always there. Now I am lead singer of a semi-known band. This whole experience has improved my life quality by miles, and i now actually feel like i have some purpose in life except from my boring post office day time job.

So if you want to sing like Anthony Kiedis, download your Red Hot Chili Peppers lyrics and start singing where you at the moment feel comfortable. I have seen to many give up on their dream before they have even tried. Don’t be one of them.

Freaky Styley Review

Jorn Antonsen asked:

In 1985, Red Hot Chili Peppers released their second album, “Freaky Styley.” The album saw their original guitarist, Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons rejoining the band for their first Chili Peppers album. Four singles was released from “Freaky Styley”, namely “Jungle Man”, “American Ghost Dance”, “Catholic School Girls Rule” and “Hollywood (Africa)”.

The band had during the previous years built a reputation for being some of the hottest live artist in Los Angeles. Now that the original gang was back together, everything was perfectly paved out for the recording of the second Red Hot Chili Peppers album.

The album was produced by self proclaimed master of funk, George Clinton. Clinton’s funkiness contributed to the funkiest album the Chili Peppers have ever made. It seems like the combination of an immature Chili Peppers and Clinton, the grand daddy of funk, was a perfect match. You can really taste the start of Red Hot Chili Peppers trademark style on this album.

If you are looking for the Peppers that we all know today from albums such as Californication and Stadium Arcadium, you will probably be disappointed with Freaky Styley. It is an album which is a whole different story. The funky style is brought to a level that the Chili Peppers had not done before and have not done after. I’m not sure that any band has for that matter.

The vocals of Anthony Kiedis is not what you would expect from him when you know what he has done later, but it fits like a glove to Flea’s bass and Irons drum work on this album. In this stage of the bands growing process, they seemed mostly interested in delivering obscure sexual and other messages that is hard to understand. That’s why you shouldn’t put to much into getting a lot out of the lyrical messages on “Freaky Styley”.

Putting yourself back in 1985 and hearing a song from Freaky Styley on the radio, you could probably imagine it being either rap group trying to get closer to rock, or a rock group trying to be a rap group. While you could place the Peppers in the last category, you have to understand that this was their natural way of expressing themselves. They were made for the funky style that Freaky Styley is all about. In the later years they have polished their style to fit a broader audience, but they have still maintained some of their natural funk instinct.

Having all this in mind, Freaky Style is really an enjoyable album. It really has no weak tracks. Even if it’s not one of the all time greats, it is absolutely an album you should not miss.
